How to Unlock Mobile Phones

Method 1 of 5: Unlocking Through Your Carrier

  1. 1
Contact your carrier's customer service line. If you meet your carrier's requirements, you may be able to unlock your phone for free.
    Ad
  2. 2
Inquire about unlocking your phone. The requirements for unlocking vary from carrier to carrier, but generally you will need to have been with them for a set amount of time (usually at least 3-6 months), and the phone will need to have been completely paid off.
    • You may be charged an early termination fee if you haven't paid off the phone's full cost yet.
  3. 3
Wait to receive the code. You will either be given your unlock code over the phone, or it will be emailed to you.
  4. 4
Insert the new SIM card in your phone. You will need to have the SIM card from your new carrier inserted in order to receive the prompt to enter your code.
    • The location of the SIM card slot varies, but it is usually behind the battery or in a tray along the side of the phone. You may need a small paperclip to eject the tray.
  5. 5
Enter your unlock code. When you power your phone on with the new SIM card, you will be prompted for your unlock code. Make sure to enter the code correctly, as entering the incorrect code too many times may lock you out of your phone.
    • Make sure that you are within the coverage area of your new service when unlocking the device.

Method 2 of 5: Unlocking Through a Paid Service

  1. 1
Write down your phone's IMEI number. This is the identification number for your phone, and will be required by the unlocking service.
    • You can get the IMEI of most phone by dialing *#06#.
    • Many phones have the IMEI printed on the back or underneath the battery.
    • You can also find the IMEI on the phone's original packaging.
  2. 2
Find a service. There are a large number of companies online that will sell you the unlock codes for your phone for payment. Different services offer to unlock different devices. However Cells unlock is a top one that unlocks all of phones usually
    • Avoid any site that will claim to unlock your phone for completing surveys or offers. These are often scams designed to gather as much personal information about you as possible.
  3. 3
Research your choice. Before paying any company to unlock your phone, research the company as much as possible. Find user reviews, and ask around in phone enthusiast forums. Always be wary of potential scams, especially when you are paying to skirt your carrier's policies.
  4. 4
Pay for the service. Oftentimes, you may have to wait several hours to a couple days in order to receive the unlock code. This is because these companies often have people working for the carriers that provide the codes for them.
    • Be sure to select all of the correct information about your device so that you get a code that works for your phone.
  5. 5
Insert your new SIM card. In order to be able to enter the unlock code, you will need to insert the new SIM card for the service you are switching to. SIM card slots are located in a variety of locations depending on the phone you are using. Typically they can either be found underneath the battery or as a tray along the side of your phone.
    • You may need a small paperclip to eject the tray.
  6. 6
Enter the code. After inserting your new SIM card, turn your phone on. You will be prompted for the unlock code. Enter the code you received and check to make sure that you have connectivity.
    • It may take a minute or two for your phone to connect to the new network. Make sure that you are inside the coverage area.

How To Change the Volume Label on External Storage Devices (USB Flash Drives)

Introduction

Userful MultiSeat™ is software that extends Linux to support several fully independent and concurrent workstations using a single computer box. This is accomplished by adding video devices (either video cards, USB multiseat devices or USB-over-LAN multiseat devices), keyboards and mice to a single PC system and installing Userful's software.
This software is available as:
  1. Userful MultiSeat: A stand-alone software package compatible with Ubuntu/Edubuntu.
  2. Userful MultiSeat Linux : Bundled with Edubuntu and other open-source software, with a focus on software for the educational sector.

This document provides instructions for changing the volume label of a removable storage device.

Why is the Storage Volume Label Important with Userful MultiSeat?

USB flash drives and other external storage devices have an intrinsic name called a "label". The volume labels of flash drives of the same brand name are typically identical out-of-the box (that is, Kingston-manufactured drives will be labeled "KINGSTON",. etc..) With Userful MultiSeat, any flash drives plugged directly into the host computer (system box) will result in errors accessing flash drives connected to any/all stations if the volume labels of the flash drives are the same.
To avoid assignment and storage access problems, Userful recommends giving storage devices unique volume labels if they are to be used in a multiseat configuration. For a simple way to do this, please see the next section.

How to Change a Storage Volume Label

Fortunately, it is easy to give a new label to a USB flash drive or other storage volume in Linux using the Gnome Disk Utility.
  1. Plug the external storage device/flash drive into the main system box. An icon for the drive should appear on the desktop.
    UMsOpenDiskUtility.png
  2. Open the Disk Utility. This application is typically found under System > Administration.

    UMsUnmountVolume.png
  3. First, find your external storage device in the list on the left of the Disk Utility Window and click to select it.
  4. Next, click the Unmount Volume" button.

    UMsEditLabel.png
  5. Click the button to "Edit Filesystem Label".

    UMsLabelUSB.png
  6. Give the flash drive or other external storage device a new label, and click "Apply".

How to Set A Custom Icon & Label For Removable Drives in Windows 7 & 8

Geek or not, there is a time when you become bored with the standard icon used by your USB memory stick or your external hard disk drive. Each time you plug it into a new computer, the same boring icon and name are displayed? What about changing them to something fun and cool? What about using a Mario inspired name and icon? It is entirely possible and this tutorial will show how it is done.

First - Find a Cool Icon & Name for the Removable Drive

First, you need a cool icon (a file with the extension .ico) and a good name to use for your geeky memory stick. I wanted a memory stick inspired by Mario games and I made my memory stick look like in the screenshot below.
Custom Icon & Label for USB Memory Stick
You can find the icon here: Mario Hat iconNOTE: Some of our readers reported that the IconsPedia website is marked as being infected by some security products. We recommend that you have a good security solution turned on when visiting this website. We have not had problems with this website in the past and we think this issue is rather recent. Hopefully, the webmasters of the website will fix this problem.
Once you have that sorted out, it is time to get to work.

Create an Autorun.inf File on the Root of the Removable Drive

Autorun.inf is a text file used by the AutoRun and AutoPlay components of Windows Operating systems. This file simply describes the AutoRun behavior of the drive on which is found. In order to work, it must be located in the root directory of the drive.
So... we must create a custom autorun.inf file on the root of the drive which we want to customize.
Create a new text file.
Custom Icon & Label for USB Memory Stick
Rename it to autorun.inf and confirm you are OK to change its file name extension.
Custom Icon & Label for USB Memory Stick
You will notice how the icon of the file changes, once renamed.
Custom Icon & Label for USB Memory Stick
Now, copy the icon to the root of the drive or in a special folder on the same drive. Then, it is time to edit the autorun.inf file.
Enter the following lines:
[Autorun]
Icon=icon name
Label=the new name of the drive
Custom Icon & Label for USB Memory Stick
If you have placed the icon in a special folder, you can specify the location to the icon, relative to the root of the drive. For example, I placed my icon in a folder named mario. Then, the icon entry looks like this:
Icon=mario\mario.ico
Custom Icon & Label for USB Memory Stick
Last but not least, you might want to set the properties of the icon file and autorun.inf so that they are hidden and not displayed when you open the content of the drive.
Custom Icon & Label for USB Memory Stick
This way, you make sure they never get accidentally deleted.

Conclusion

I discovered this fun dilemma while browsing the new discussions on the Super Usercommunity. You can find the discussion about this geeky trick here: How do you customize the icon on a USB stick?.
The awesome part about the procedure above is that it works on all types of removable media. You can use the same steps on USB memory sticks, external hard disk driver or even CDs/DVDs or Blu-ray discs you create.

How to Change Google Drive Default Folder Location on Windows

Google Drive, an online storage service provided by Google lets you store your files to the cloud and share those with others. To sync your Google Drive files and folders with desktop, Google provides a client software for both Windows PC and Mac. Once you download Google Drive client on your PC, you can give your login information to it and it will start to download and sync files on a default location on your Documents directory on Windows. To upload a file to Google Drive, you can simply put the file to that location and the client will automatically upload it to online to keep files in sync.
Google Drive
The default location or address Google Drive uses to store and sync all files and folders is C:\Users\<user>\Google Drive. It also creates a shortcut to the Windows Explorer Favorites entry. So to store or get any file from Google Drive, the default location is your only destination if you are not using browser. However in some cases, you might need to alter the default storage location and change it to a custom directory you want. While many folks believe that it can’t be changed, Google Drive has official support to change default location. No matter you are yet to install Google Drive, or already using Google Drive on your PC, I am giving you the walk through to change the location to a custom directory. Use the method that applies to you:

Method 1: At Installation Time

  1. At the installation of Google Drive software, after signing in, it will show you a wizard. In the last wizard screen, click on Advanced Setup button instead of clicking Done.
    Click Advanced Setup
  2. In Advanced Setup window, under Sync options tab, click Change from Folder Location as shown below.
    Change destination
  3. Then select or create your desired location from selection window and click Ok. Here’s my custom folder location:
    New Location
  4. Now hit Start sync. And it’s done.

Method 2: After Installation and Signed in

  1. Right-click on Google Drive icon on system tray and click Preference.
    Access Drive Preference
  2. In the Preference window, under Account tab, click Disconnect Account. Review what it says and go ahead.
    Disconnect Account
  3. After disconnection, again right-click on system tray icon and click Sign in.
  4. Now you can continue to follow Method 1.
In the send method, the old folder will remain to its location and you need to delete it manually.
Another method is to quit Google Drive and move the default folder to the desired folder, and then launch Google Drive and locate the changed location when it ask to locate. However that didn’t work for me as it showed error.
