How to Change Microsoft Edge to Search Google Instead of Bing

Microsoft’s new Edge browser uses Bing as its default search engine, but there’s a good chance you prefer Google or another search engine. Edge can use any search engine that supports OpenSearch as its default.
Edge no longer uses the old “search provider” plug-in system IE used, so you don’t have to worry about installing those. It also has this option easily accessible — it’s not buried in the old version of IE, as it was on Windows 8.
In this article we’re using DuckDuckGo as an example search engine, because you can change the browser to search anything. If you want Google instead, just substitute Google in the instructions wherever you see DuckDuckGo. Although we’ll note that DuckDuckGo is a great search engine too.

Get More Search Engines

Microsoft Edge no longer uses search providers you have to install from Microsoft’s website. Instead, when you visit a web page that uses the “OpenSearch” search standard to expose its search engine information, Edge notices this and makes a record of the search engine information.
This is the same way Google Chrome works, too — visit a web page with OpenSearch and it’ll automatically be detected.
All you need to do is visit the search engine’s website — that’s it. If you want to install Google, visit Google’s homepage. For DuckDuckGo, visit DuckDuckGo’s homepage. Not every search engine supports OpenSearch yet, but we expect search engines will add support for this very quickly.

Change Your Default Search Engine

To change your search provider, click or tap the menu button — that’s the button with three dots at the top-right corner of the MIcroosft Edge window. Select “Settings” in the menu.
img_559756b20a280
Scroll down in the Settings panel and tap or click the “View advanced settings” button near the bottom.
Scroll down again in the Advanced settings list and you’ll see the “Search in the address bar with” box. Click or tap it and select “Add new.”
You’ll see a list of available search providers. Select the search engine you want to use and click or tap “Add as default.”
If the search engine you want to use doesn’t appear here, be sure you’ve visited the search engine’s homepage first. If you have and it still doesn’t appear, that search engine doesn’t support OpenSearch yet. You may want to contact the search engine and ask it to support OpenSearch so you can use it as your default search engine in Microsoft Edge.

Search From the Address Bar or New Tab Page

This also affects the “Where to next?” box on the new tab page, giving you a way to easily search your favorite search engine. You can now type a search into Edge’s address bar and press Enter — it’ll automatically search your default search engine. Edge will even provide suggestions from it in the drop-down box, assuming your search engine supports suggestions and you leave them enabled in Edge’s settings.
To quickly search with keyboard shortcuts, press Ctrl + T to open a new tab page or Ctrl + L to focus the address bar on the current page and start typing your search.
Unsurprisingly, this option doesn’t affect anything outside Microsoft Edge. When you perform a search from the Start menu or via Cortana and select “Search the web,” Windows will search the web with Bing. Cortana is, after all, “powered by Bing.” The above option only applies to searches you begin from within Microsoft Edge.

As usual, this only modifies a single browser’s settings. If you use Internet Explorer for legacy applications, you’ll need to change its search engine the old-fashioned way. Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers have their own default search options.

How to Easily Change the Order of Paragraphs in a Word Document

00_lead_image_unsorted_to_sorted
When writing a document, most of us write the first draft, making changes as you go. Then, you edit it, rewrite it, and rearrange it. When rearranging a document, you may want to reorder some paragraphs. We’ll show you an easy way to do this.
Determine which paragraphs you want to reorder. Then, type the number “1” as the first character (then type a space) of the paragraph you want to be first in the revised order. Type the appropriate numbers as the first characters (with a space after each number) of all the paragraphs you want to reorder, similar to making a numbered list.
NOTE: When you add the numbers to the beginning of your paragraphs, Word may convert the paragraphs into a numbered list. If it converts a paragraph to a numbered list when you add a number to the beginning, press “Ctrl + Z” to undo the conversion. Your number will be left as you typed it. Also, if there are more than nine paragraphs you want to sort, make sure you add a leading “0” to your numbers (01, 02, 03, etc.).
Select all the paragraphs you numbered. If the paragraphs are not contiguous, select the first paragraph and then press the “Ctrl” key when selecting the remaining paragraphs with the mouse.
01_numbers_on_paragraphs
Click the “Home” tab, if it’s not already active.
02_clicking_home_tab
In the “Paragraph” section, click the “Sort” button.
03_clicking_sort_tool
The “Sort Text” dialog box displays. In the “Sort by” section at the top, make sure “Paragraphs” is selected in the first drop-down list. It should be selected by default. Then, select “Number” from the “Type” drop down list and make sure the “Ascending” radio button is selected. Accept the default setting of “No header row” under “My list has” and cllick “OK”.
04_sort_text_dialog
The paragraphs are automatically rearranged in the order specified by the numbers you added. You must manually delete the numbers from the beginning of the paragraphs when you’re done sorting them.

How to Use Windows 10’s Storage Settings to Free Hard Drive Space

Windows 10 introduces quite a few improvements over its predecessor and of these is the new Storage settings, which gives users detailed analyses of what and how much is using up their disk space.
Windows 8.1 didn’t do a very thorough job of this. In fact, while it did provide some information, the only control it gave over disk space consumption was the ability to delete Windows Store app, which, to be honest, never really consumed that much disk space in the first place.
Windows 10 takes the idea of storage diagnostics several steps further by providing real information you can use, and tools that let you see what is using up space, and even allowing you to reclaim some of it.
To access the Storage settings, click the “System” group and then choose “Storage” from the resulting list.
The Storage options will display your system drive as well all other drives or partitions on your system. Click on any to see what is consuming what and how much.
In the following example, we see that 46 GB of system drive is consumed. If we want to refresh this (say we delete some items in the meantime), we can click the little red circular arrow where is says “Last refreshed on …”
Clicking on the “System and reserved” heading will show us pertinent information on our system: system files, virtual memory, hibernation files, and system restore.
Note that hibernation file takes up over six gigabytes of drive space. If you don’t use hibernate, then you will probably want that space back. We recommend you disable hibernate, which will subsequently delete the hiberfil.sys file from your C: drive’s root folder.
Clicking the “Apps and games” category will display everything we’ve installed on our system. We can search for an app, sort them, or choose another drive to examine.
Click on any app or game and you can quickly uninstall it. This is far different from Windows 8.1, which only allowed you uninstall Windows Store apps.
Click “Manage optional features” and you see what kind optional items you’ve installed on your system. Again, if you select anything from this list, you can quickly uninstall it.
Back on the C: drive’s storage used screen, if we scroll down a little there’s a category to manage temporary files. Here you can delete these temporary files, as well as downloads and anything in the recycle bin.
Clicking on “Maps” will open the “Offline maps” settings, where you can “Delete all maps” you might have downloaded.
Similarly, the “Other users” category will open to the “Family & other users” options, which we’ve discussed previously in our article on managing user accounts in Windows 10.
Finally, the “Other” category contains the largest folders on your system that defy easy categorization. Note, in this screenshot we’ve located nearly six gigabytes alone in the “C:\$Windows.~WS” folder.
In an earlier screenshot, you may have noticed that you can “manage system restore” files. If you click this, you will be whisked to the “System Properties” control panel, which will let you turn system restore off or on for your disks.

Select the drive or partition you want and then click “Configure…” and then you can “Delete all restore points” for that particular drive.
If you want to control “where your apps, documents, music, pictures and videos are saved by default” then you need to head back to the main Storage page and scroll to the bottom. There you can quickly change the default save locations to any drive or partition on your system.
So, how did we do after going through and deleting old system restore points and temporary files?
Not bad, we managed to reclaim about 19 GB of space, and there’s probably quite a bit more if we really set about it.
The point though is to illustrate just how effective the Storage settings are by showing you where Windows 10 is using disk space and easily letting you manage it. Indeed, this is really the first time Windows has had such a comprehensive tool that goes beyond the Disk Cleanup utility.

How to Turn Off the Insert Options Floating Button in Excel

00_lead_image_insert_options_button
Excel includes a feature that allows you to quickly apply some basic formatting to inserted rows, columns, or cells in your worksheet. When you insert any of these items, a small, floating button, called “Insert Options”, displays next to the inserted row, column, or cell.
This “Insert Options” button has a small paintbrush on it. When you click the button, Excel displays options for quickly formatting the inserted row, column, or cell. This can be handy at times, but the button might also be annoying. However, it’s easy to turn it off.
To turn off the “Insert Options” button, click the “File” tab.
01_clicking_file_tab
On the backstage screen, click “Options” in the list of items on the left.
02_clicking_options
On the “Excel Options” dialog box, click “Advanced” in the list of items on the left.
03_clicking_advanced
Scroll down to the “Cut, copy, and paste” section on the right and select the “Show Insert Options buttons” check box so there is NO check mark in the box.
04_turning_off_show_insert_options
Click “OK” to accept the change and close the “Excel Options” dialog box.
05_clicking_ok
When you turn off the “Insert Options” button, you can still format the inserted row, column, or cell. Simply, select the row, column, or cell and right-click on it. A mini toolbar displays along with a popup menu. Use the mini toolbar to apply basic formatting to the item and perform other actions on the item using the popup menu.
06_manually_formatting_row
If you turn off the “Insert Options” button while an inserted row, column, or cell is still highlighted, the button still displays. The next time you insert a row, column, or cell, the “Insert Options” button will not display.

How to Remap Your Windows Cut/Copy/Paste to OS X-like Controls and Vice-Versa

Windows 10 is out, so we’re going from our Macs to PCs with daily regularity. While there are quite a few differences between them, nothing trips us up more than cut/copy/paste. Here is how to remap cut/copy/paste so they’re the same on both platforms.
One of the hardest things to get used to when we go from Mac to Windows, or Windows to Mac is cut/copy/paste. On a Mac, this is accomplished using the “Command +” combination, while on Windows it’s done through “Control +”.
If you aren’t using an Apple-branded keyboard, such as one with a Windows key, then that will double as the “Command” key on your Mac, however, Windows still uses “Control” as its modifier so while you may be used to using “Command” on your Mac, on Windows all that will typically do is open the Start menu.
Today we want to show you how to do some simple remapping on both your Mac and your Windows machine so that cut/copy/paste doesn’t trip you up. Of course, this can be applied to all other keyboard shortcuts that use “Command” or “Control” as well.

On a Mac

On a Mac, this is easy. We’ve talked at great length about just how configurable the Mac keyboard is and how you can change and assign keyboard shortcuts for a vast number of items. It’s no different with modifier keys. Open the keyboard preferences and click the “Modifier Keys…” button.
You can change the following four modifier keys: “Caps Lock”, “Control”, “Option”, and “Command”.
For our purposes, we’re only going to modify “Control” to “Command” and “Command” to “Control”.
Now, whenever we want to use any keyboard shortcut such as cut, copy, paste, or anything that previously required the “Command” key, we’ll instead use “Control” instead to execute it.

On Windows

Windows doesn’t provide a simple way to remap keys without modifying the registry, but you can use third-party software that will quickly get the job done. We recommend SharpKeys, which provides an easy-to-use interface and makes short work of everything.
To remap your “Control” key to your “Windows” key, the easiest thing to do is click the “Type Key” button.
First, press the left “Control” button in the left column, then press the “Windows” key in the right column.
Now you see that we’ve remapped the left “Control” button to act as the “Windows” key.
We’re still not done. Even though the “Control” key has been remapped to act as our “Windows” key, we still need to remap the “Windows” key to the “Control” key. Otherwise, you will just have two keys which act like the “Windows” key.
The final result will look like the following screenshot.
The last thing to do is to click the “Write to Registry” button. You will be required to log out of your account or restart the system.
Once your logout/login or restart, your new key mappings will take effect and you will be able to seamlessly go from Mac to PC or PC to Mac without annoying keyboard shortcut gaffes.
